In the last 30 years, increasing public awareness of local and global environmental issues has seen a rise in the membership of activist groups like Greenpeace Aotearoa New Zealand. Founded in 1974, Greenpeace NZ has been responsible for a number of very public protest activities, from campaigns against French nuclear testing in the Pacific to those against Japanese whaling (above). In 2012 Greenpeace activists (including New Zealand actor Lucy Lawless) delayed a Shell-contracted oil drilling ship from sailing from Taranaki to the Arctic.
