Ponies pulling sleds, by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, 1911. Alexander Turnbull Library. PA1-f-066-05-02

Description

This photograph shows ponies pulling sleds in the Antarctic, led by members of the British Antarctic (“Terra Nova”) Expedition. The photograph was taken by thier leader, Captain Robert Falcon Scott in 1911. Like the motorised sleds Scott also brought, the ponies were not a success and the final expedition team ended up pulling the sleds themselves.

Discussion

What kind of animal did Amundsen use to help him reach the South Pole?
