Be afraid, be very afraid

The copyright (Infringing file sharing amendment) Act and regulations came into force on September 1, 2011.

What is the Act designed to do?

The aim is to deter people from downloading and sharing copyrightable online materials such as movies, music, TV shows etc, using tools such as BitTorrents.

Why is it important?

  • It makes it easier for copyright holders to penalise copyright infringers. Infringers can potentially be fined quite substantial amounts of money (up to $15,000.00) and there is also potential for internet suspension.
  • It can effect anyone who has an internet account, whether they have breached copyright themselves or not. Computer using kids could implicate their families.
  • The Act applies to any downloading device – computer, mobile phone or any other smart device that comes along that allows you to download and share files.
