Create Readers

We want to help create motivated and engaged young readers. This blog is about children's and YA literature (especially New Zealand), literacy research, and ways to get, and keep, kids reading.

Don’t let the movie ruin the book

MovieMovies based on books are commonplace but how often have you heard someone exclaim – “Oh, the original idea came from a book?”

Nerdfighteria is the creative group force behind Readit1st . This site is all about promoting the books that prompt the movies and enjoying the stories the way they were originally told in print. This is something they feel passionate about since reading the books  “… requires more interaction, more brain, more relaxation, more free time, and more commitment. We think those are all things that the world doesn’t have enough of these days.”

You can join the site by making a pledge to either to “read the book before I see the movie wherever humanly possible” or alternatively to “read the book whenever I please, but I would like to know what new movies are based on books”

Once you’ve made your pledge you are subscribed to receive the site’s newsletter, which informs you of new movies based on books.

This would make an interesting discussion with students about the number of major movies based on books that you have in your collection, a focus for a display or even a competition in the library.

How many books do you have in your collection that were made into movies? For a comprehensive listing of films based on books take a look at Mid-Continent Public Library’s site.
