We want to help create motivated and engaged young readers. This blog is about children's and YA literature (especially New Zealand), literacy research, and ways to get, and keep, kids reading.
Steve Jenkins book Just a second is an unusual look at time and begins with examples of what can happen in one second: a bumblebee beats its wings 200 times; a human can blink seven times. In one minute an elephant’s heart beats about 30 times, a child’s heart beats about 100 times.
The book continues to show activities that take place within one hour, one day, one week, one month, and one year. In the final pages actions that are very quick and very slow are followed by a universe timeline and a graph of the earth’s human population growth from 1750 onwards. The final double page spread shows a comparison of animal and plant life spans.
This title is full of fun facts complimented by bright colourful collage illustrations and will appeal to a wide range of children.
