We want to help create motivated and engaged young readers. This blog is about children's and YA literature (especially New Zealand), literacy research, and ways to get, and keep, kids reading.
Readers who love humour and solving a mystery will enjoy 9 year old Harriet’s imaginative way in which she deals with life’s issues.
The reader is transported into Harriet’s inner world of thoughts and poems, (Harriet wants to be a poet when she grows up). She is brave when dealing with a bully and being in a swimming carnival; she also pretends to be a ‘Cinderella’ character for the school play and a secret agent.
I enjoyed reading this book aloud because the short sentences are bursting with subtle humour and quirkiness.
The clever type-face font design really appeals and like a picture poem, it adds to the whole reading experience of learning and exploring new words and their contexts.
New Zealand author Claire Craig is currently the Children’s Publisher at Australia Pan Macmillan.
