2011 Award Winners announced

First time author and first time illustrator win Newbery and Caldecott Awards

A slow starting historical novel set in Kansas during the depression has impressed the judges and won the Newbery Medal for debut author Clare Vanderpool. 'Moon over  Manifest'  according to judges,' illustrates the importance of stories as a way for children to understand the past, inform the present and provide hope for the future'. Wood block prints feature in the Caldecott Medal for illustration . In  'A Sick Day for Amos McGee, first time illustrator Erin E Stead and husband Philip C Stead collaborated to tell the story of a zookeeper, ill in bed, visited by his animals.

Nailer ,a teenage boy, working hand to mouth disassembling grounded oil tankers is the central character in Young Adult, Michael L Printz award winner 'Ship Breaker' by Paolo Bacigalupi.
