Description

With so many pines grown in New Zealand one might think they are a native. In fact the pine tree originates from California.  Pines have proved an ideal softwood tree for growing in New Zealand conditions. As a plant it is fast growing and tolerates a range of climatic and soil factors. Over the last 50 years biotechnology has also improved the pine trees’ disease resistance and wood quality. However one thing hasn’t changed - most pine trees are still planted by hand.

Discussion

Where is New Zealand’s largest pine plantation and how big is it?
