Description

As far back as far as 1851 it was reported that, “No traces of the Takahe had been discovered since the arrival of any of the English Colonists.” Considered extinct the Takahe was famously rediscovered by Dr Geoffrey Orbell in 1948 in the Murchison Mountains. Today Takahe are still endangered, but thanks to the intensive work over the last 60 years by the Wildlife Service and subsequent Department of Conservation, Takahe are thriving.
