Karikari Peninsula in Northland is recognised as a place of outstanding beauty – particularly its bays, beaches, wetlands and sand dunes. Today the Department of Conservation (DOC) administers the Matai Bay campsite on the Peninsula as public conservation land. For a small fee people are able to camp but as part of their environmental code Toitu te whenua (Leave the land undisturbed) campers must not light fires, take family pets, drive on the beach and must dispose of their own rubbish. DOC manages over 1000 huts and campsites throughout New Zealand.
Why is it so important to have an environmental code for DOC campsites?
