Description

Even though New Zealand is a remote island nation our Government spends millions each year to keep out unwanted plants, diseases and also pests like the painted apple moth, the yellow crazy ant, and cane toad. If introduced, pests like these would have a devastating impact on our native species and agricultural industry, as this example of damage by a codling moth caterpillar (Cydia pomonella) shows. In New Zealand anyone who thinks they have found an unwanted pest, can call the Biosecurity New Zealand Hotline.

Discussion

What are some recently introduced species that have had a negative impact on New Zealand’s environment?
