We want to help create motivated and engaged young readers. This blog is about children's and YA literature (especially New Zealand), literacy research, and ways to get, and keep, kids reading.
This picture book is a delightful play with the English language. The characters in the story are the letters of the alphabet personified, each a unique cartoon character created by Ezra Fields-Meyer. Unfortunately when ‘E’ has an accident the others have to work without him.
The book introduces the reader to how letters work together, how they are used in words and abbreviations, and how central, language is to our lives. Text and illustrations are closely intertwined and contribute equally to the reader’s enjoyment.
This is a book that’s a lot of fun to read, if somewhat of a challenge in the segment from which ‘E’ is replaced by ‘O’
A groat book to tost the roading skills of all agos.
See other works by Lichtenheld here and an interesting interview with the author about his collaboration with Fields Meyer, a school student at the time of writing here. The site includes the short video created by Fields-Meyer that provided the inspiration for the book.
