We want to help create motivated and engaged young readers. This blog is about children's and YA literature (especially New Zealand), literacy research, and ways to get, and keep, kids reading.

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo

The horrors of World War One through a horse’s eyes.

War HorseWar horse has been released as a movie but better still read the book.

A farm horse called Joey is sold to the British Army at the beginning of the First World War and spends the war with British and German soldiers and a French family. The device of telling the story from the horse’s point of view works well to convey the universal horror of war experienced by soldiers and civilians. However there is not too much graphic detail that would make it unsuitable for younger readers.

First published in 1982 the book has been reprinted in a child friendly format with the poster from the brilliant stage adaptation on the cover in. You can also watch Michael Morpurgo talking about writing the book here.
