The fabulous flying machines of Alberto Santos-Dumont by Victoria Griffith

Why was Dumont the “Father of Flight”?

Alberto Santos-DumontOriginally from Brazil Alberto Santos-Dumont moved with his family to Paris where Alberto took his first balloon ride and fell in love with flying. He became well known for using a dirigible he designed and built to run everyday errands. Alberto was good friends with Louis Cartier who made and named after him the Santos wristwatch which is still produced today.

In 1906 he gained recognition in France as the first pilot to lift and land a completely self-propelled airplane. Ill-health and disappointment saw Alberto return to Brazil where he became and remains a celebrated folk hero.

Providing another aspect in the often controversial aviation history I enjoyed reading this story of Alberto’s life, bought to life by the quirky impressionist inspired illustrations of Eva Montanari. Biographical information is included.
