We want to help create motivated and engaged young readers. This blog is about children's and YA literature (especially New Zealand), literacy research, and ways to get, and keep, kids reading.
Andy Griffiths presentation to 80 students from schools around Auckland at the National Library was a powerful example of how humour can be used to inspire kids to read. Andy spoke of the highs of being a writer, and the lows (many in the nether regions) of the ideas and experiences that sparked his stories. With jokes, entertaining anecdotes, a killer koala prop and lots of audience interaction he encouraged kids to read, record their own funny stories and annoy their teachers. Tayla from Monte Cecilia summed up the session 'awesome, funny, entertaining, out there in a good way, inspiring, cool'.
